What Are The Most Common Beetles In The U.S. To Check For?

  • Carpet beetles - Carpet beetles are approximately 1/10 to 1/8 inch in length with an oval and rounded body. They can ruin clothing and household material rapidly. Carpet beetles feed on natural fibers such as wool and silk, including carpets, clothing, and blankets and fabric such as curtains.
  • Powderpost beetles - The larvae of powderpost beetles are pests of hardwoods. They are especially in a situation where the wood is in a high percentage of moisture. They are most destructive in houses with crawlspaces or houses where logs or lumber was used without first being properly treated. Any reports of powderpost beetles should be immediately investigated .
  • Ground beetles - Ground beetles love to eat insects that damage our gardens and landscapes. As far as pests that hurt us directly are not common. They are easy to identify as they have long oval and metallic bodies. Unfortunately, the larger black-colored ground beetle is also the one that black widows feed on, so the old adage is correct the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
  • Panetrating Beetles

There are several important species of wood-destroying beetles in this family, including other Anobiidae, some Lyctidae, and a very few Cerambycidae and Buprestidae. It is difficult to generalize about a group of beetles that includes so many species, but most Anobiidae can be recognized by their elongate, narrow-oval or flattened bodies and their humped or humpbacked thorax.

f you begin to see small holes or fine dust around wood in your structures, or tiny seven-eight inch-long brown beetles crawling around or flying very slowly, you may have wood-destroying beetles. In more advanced Infestations, tunnels filled with fine powder or dust become packed tightly in the wood. Damage by most wood-destroying beetles occurs over a period of years, but some, particularly the deathwatch beetles that are associated with old homes in which large amounts of oak have been used, cause significant damage that can be very difficult to repair. Or if you think you have beetles or any other pest issues contact the professionals at Ekoterra Pest Control. Our state-licensed technicians will have them out in no time.
