What Are Aphids?

Aphids are some of the most common pests found in yards or gardens. There are many different types of aphids, and they can come in various colors, including green, yellow, brown, black, pink, or lavender. Measuring between 1/8 and ¼ of an inch, these oval-bodied bugs usually have soft, pear-shaped bodies with long antennae and spindly legs.

They can be found on a wide variety of plants, including:

Aphids feed on various plants’ juices and leaves when fruits are not available. Like spider mites, they prefer to dine in large groups, congregating on the tops of leaves, leaf buds, blossoms, fruit, and stems. They can cause the foliage to wilt, curl, or yellow and the plants to become stunted. Aphids then produce a sticky honeydew that attracts harmful black sooty mold.

Various Types of Aphids

The most common species of aphids found in California lawns are:

  • Melon Aphid
  • Peach Potato Aphid
  • Blue Alfalfa
  • Aphis Coreopsis
  • Grape Phylloxera
  • Violet Aphid
  • Buckthorn Aphid
  • Beet Leafhopper

Aphid Control Solutions

At Ekoterra, our professional Camarillo aphid control experts recommend the following tactics to manage your aphid problem:

  • Populate your landscape with ladybugs, lacewing flies, and green lacewing bugs, which consume the majority of aphids that are present.
  • Install birdhouses in your yard to encourage swallows, warblers, and wrens to stop by and control the aphid population for you.
  • Prevent ants from harming aphid eaters by keeping ants at bay. Aphids produce honeydew, a sweet ant snack. They go so far as to carry aphid eggs to their nests for protection and then transport the newly hatched aphids back to your yard, where they will continuously produce honeydew in return for the cozy accommodations you’ve provided them with. Look for nests and trails, and remove potential entry points.
  • Apply horticultural oils (best for green peach aphid control) or insecticidal soaps (especially for large-bodied aphids). These products act as non-toxic dry sprays and will control aphids for a long period of time by suffocating them.
  • Remove heavily infested plant parts and throw them into the garbage or destroy them.

Remember that in a well-managed landscape ecosystem, the use of harmful, broad-spectrum insecticides is counterproductive because the chemicals will eliminate beneficial plants immediately, leaving only those plants that have developed resistant aphids. If you see an aphid population out of control, contact your region’s Master Gardener office or integrated pest management helpline for further assistance.

Can Runoff Water Affect Aphid Populations?

If the water that runs off your property enters our storm drains – or the local rivers and ponds – it can further contaminate that water with harmful chemicals that kill salmon, trout, and other sensitive fish, as well as other beneficial insects present in the body of water. If you suspect you have a bug problem but haven’t yet applied products to your landscape or garden, you’re encouraged to try alternative methods or less toxic products.
